Our skin reacts differently to the changing weather that comes with each season. And with summer ending, we are coming out of that naturally hydrated, glowing, dewy skin look and transitioning into a more matte finish for drier weather. Makeup Artist Carrie Lentz talks about changing up your makeup for the fall and winter season. Here’s what she had to say…

“Heading into fall and winter, we are moving away from that summery, barely-there look,” Carrie says. “This season, it’s all about perfecting the skin — giving it a healthy look and highlighting with concealer.

The average woman doesn’t have, or necessarily want, a ton of products, she says. That’s why Carrie suggests using concealer for highlighting. “I prefer a peach tone concealer to help brighten the skin. Look for a concealer that is a shade lighter than your skin to help highlight. You can even use a powder to help set the concealer,” Carrie adds.

Carrie applies the MAC Prep + Prime concealer underneath Brittany Arnold’s eyes.

“This season, I am loving the cushion compact foundations. LancÔme makes two kinds that I really like. One is a 24-hour wear with more coverage, and the other is a more lightweight foundation for a natural, healthy look. LancÔme’s stick foundation is also a favorite of mine. It can be used both as concealer and foundation for a natural matte finish. This stick is great for travel and is fast and easy for the woman on the go.”

Of course, women have different types of skin, different textures, and complexions, so it can be tricky deciding which makeup is best for you. “With foundation, it’s so important to find what your skin needs” Carrie says. Most people will shy away from anything that will make their skin look shiny or greasy, but it all goes back to your skincare routine. Skincare is the essential part to making your foundation look its best.”

After applying the overall foundation, Carrie followed up with a lighter shade of foundation to illuminate her eyes.

Fall makeup trends to try…

Lips: “This season we are seeing more of that dark, almost goth lip — deep reds and ‘vampy’ shades of purples. When wearing a bold lip, keep the rest of your makeup simple.” Go for that clean, fresh, smoothed-out look with the lip being the main feature.

Carrie applies a MAC matte deep plum color lipstick followed by the lip liner and lip gloss.

Eyes: “That copper penny shadow color is so big right now. It’s great to wisp it on and go without a lot of work. It also complements most all skin tones,” Carrie says. “We’re also seeing very graphic eyeliner this season — taking the traditional cat-eye to another level and even using bright colors for this look instead of black.”

After applying an eyeshadow base and a matte beige eyeshadow, Carrie uses a matte caramel/bronze eyeshadow in the crease of the eyelid. Next, she applies a frosted copper eyeshadow on the roll of the eyelid and then blends down to the lash line. She applies the MAC Teddy color eyeliner in the base of the eyelashes and then smudges the line to create a slight smokey eye.

Brows: “Clean, sculpted brows. Remember to embrace your own brow and make it fit your face.” There isn’t one perfect shape or size. Work with what you have and make it your own.
