I don’t know about you, but once the Christmas tree is packed away and the holiday sparkle dims, I find myself craving a reset. The New Year always feels like it’s full of fresh possibilities, and for me, that often begins with tackling my closet. After weeks of holiday parties, gift wrapping, and maybe a little too much late-night online shopping, my wardrobe ends up looking more like chaos than joy.

So last week, with a cozy mug of hot cocoa in hand and the resolve to start 2025 on the right foot, I got to work. My rules were simple: if I hadn’t worn it in the past year, it didn’t fit, or it didn’t make me feel good, it was out. One by one, I piled everything onto my bed—sweaters, jeans, dresses, and even that sequined New Year’s Eve dress I bought last year and only wore once.

But this wasn’t just about clearing space. I wanted to pass along the things I no longer needed to someone who could genuinely use them. First, I packed up a bag for Dress for Success Louisville, a nonprofit that provides professional clothing to women preparing for job interviews. Dropping off those blouses and work slacks felt like a win-win—less clutter for me, and a confidence boost for someone else stepping into a big opportunity.

Next up was The Free Store, a no-cost shop here in Louisville where families in need can pick up essentials. It felt good knowing those sweaters I hadn’t touched in ages and the mountain of kids’ clothes my sister asked me to sort through would be going to a good home instead of collecting dust in a closet.

Of course, not everything was fit for donation. A few things were just too worn out—like my ancient leggings and a couple of threadbare t-shirts. Instead of tossing them, I swung by the H&M at Oxmoor Center, which has a garment recycling program. They even sweetened the deal with a little discount voucher for my next visit.

By the time I finished hanging up the last of my “keepers,” my space felt lighter and my mind clearer. It’s amazing how much a little decluttering can do for your mood.

Now, I’m stepping into 2025 with intention, and it all started with a hot cocoa-fueled closet cleanout. If you’re feeling the itch for a fresh start, trust me—your space is a great place to begin. The best gifts you can give yourself are a little room to grow and a sense of purpose.

Here’s to a fresh start and finding joy in the little things. Cheers to the New Year!
