A Louisville Tradition Bringing Joy to Over 1,000 Children This Christmas
The holiday season is a time of giving, and St. Vincent de Paul in Louisville embodies this spirit through its Annual Santa Shop—a cherished tradition that brings hope and happiness to families in need.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, St. Vincent de Paul will welcome families to its Santa Shop, a magical space where parents and guardians can “shop” for Christmas gifts at no cost. The event provides an opportunity for families to choose presents for their children, ensuring there’s something special under the tree come Christmas morning.
“This event is always so warm, fun, and joyful for everyone involved,” shared St. Vincent de Paul CEO, Jennifer Clark. “Families don’t just leave with one or two items—they walk away with an entire bag of gifts for each child, filled with toys, clothing, stuffed animals, and items for older kids. We serve everyone aged 17 and under, making it a truly inclusive tradition.”
This year, the Santa Shop is set to serve more than 1,000 children in the Louisville community. Families are assigned time slots to select gifts, allowing for an organized and personalized shopping experience.
For Sabrina Woods, this year’s event is particularly meaningful. Recently housed on St. Vincent de Paul’s campus after years of homelessness and battling addiction, Woods is celebrating Christmas for the first time in a long while—this time, surrounded by her grandchildren.
“I haven’t celebrated Christmas in the past,” Woods reflected. “It was just me by myself, and I couldn’t enjoy it with my grandbabies. They give me so much joy—they’re my strength and energy, and they keep me going.”
Woods is already looking ahead to brighter days, with hopes of securing a car and a washer and dryer for her new home. But for now, her focus is on making this Christmas unforgettable for her grandchildren.
“This is my first time experiencing the Santa Shop,” she said. “I know I’m going to be happy and thankful for whatever I can give them. It means everything to me.”
The Annual Santa Shop not only provides tangible gifts but also fosters a sense of community, compassion, and hope for families like Sabrina’s.
