UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE VOLLEYBALL COACH
Written by Tiffany Felts
Dani Busboom Kelly’s journey from a standout player to an accomplished coach is a testament to her passion for volleyball. Since taking the helm at the University of Louisville in 2016, she has transformed the Cardinals into a powerhouse, driving them to historic achievements and instilling a culture of excellence both on and off the court.
Transitioning from setter to libero during her collegiate career at Nebraska, she gained invaluable insights into the game, which have greatly influenced her coaching style. Her firsthand understanding of the demands and nuances of volleyball allows her to connect deeply with her players, providing them with both technical guidance and emotional support. Her focus on fostering strong communication and camaraderie within the team ensures that every player feels integral to the team’s success.
Busboom Kelly’s coaching philosophy centers on authenticity and a genuine love for the sport and the team. She believes in empowering her players by fostering a player-led environment, where trust and mutual respect are paramount. Her strategies for motivating her team in high-pressure situations include instilling a strong belief in their abilities and emphasizing training. This approach has led to remarkable results, with the Cardinals achieving unprecedented success under her guidance.
Mental resilience is a cornerstone of Busboom Kelly’s training regimen. She cultivates this trait by creating a supportive environment where players feel trusted and valued. Beyond their athletic performance, she prioritizes the overall well-being of her athletes, leveraging the extensive resources at the University of Louisville, including academic support, mental health services, and nutritional guidance. Balancing fun and rest with hard work ensures that her players remain mentally and physically healthy.
Busboom Kelly has also faced challenges as a female coach, “juggling the stigmas that you’re not going to work as hard or not be available, with the mom-guilt when I have to travel… and being a female head coach in admin meetings dominated by men, trying to find your voice.”
Her advice to other women is both empowering and practical: “Don’t get discouraged early on, keep fighting,” she advises, underscoring the importance of perseverance and self-belief when trying to find your voice. “And you can do it all. There’s a stigma that you can’t have a family, but you can.” Busboom Kelly has overcome these stigmas, navigating the complexities of motherhood and coaching with grace and determination… proving you can have a successful professional career and a family.
Busboom Kelly continues to lead the Cardinals to new heights, inspiring future generations along the way. The Louisville volleyball program stands out not only for its athletic excellence but also for building a supportive environment for female athletes. Their culture reflects values of passion, competitiveness, and authenticity, mirroring the spirit of the university and the city.
Reflecting on her coaching career, Busboom Kelly highlights the first Final Four appearance at Freedom Hall as a particularly memorable achievement, marking a full-circle moment in her journey with Louisville volleyball. Looking ahead, her aspirations are clear: to win a national championship on our home court.
Under Busboom Kelly’s leadership, the University of Louisville volleyball team has the chance to do just that.
