If you’re looking for some good entertainment this month, you won’t want to miss this performance.

William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
Kentucky Shakespeare

Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (or What You Will) is a comedy of gender confusion, in which a girl disguises herself as a man to be near the count she adores, only to be pursued by the woman he loves.

This is the first time Kentucky Shakespeare will produce an indoor winter production in its 56-year performance history. Proceeds from ticket sales will help support the free 2016 Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park this upcoming summer.

Historically, the Twelfth Night was a festive holiday celebrated on the 12th day after Christmas, marking the end of the holiday season. It was a time of revelry and practical jokes when everything was turned upside down with topsy-turvy chaos. This production runs the week of the Twelfth Night holiday.

“It’s a great opportunity for our community to experience a full-scale Kentucky Shakespeare production indoors during the winter,” says Matt Wallace, Kentucky Shakespeare producing artistic director and director of the production. “Twelfth Night (or What You Will) is actually the play’s original title, the What You Will being the subtitle. This is also the only play Shakespeare ever wrote a subtitle for.”

Wallace says Twelfth Night is also his favorite Shakespeare play. Why? “Because I think it’s got some of his best characters and plot devices. It’s very funny, but it’s also heartwarming.”

Wallace is particularly pleased that KS’s Twelfth Night production is a local cast and crew. “And three live on-stage musicians will perform Renaissance music during the play,” he reveals. “They’ll also play music pre-show on stage as the audience arrives at the theater.”
