In January, you might expect to see women sporting workout wear more than usual due to New Year’s resolutions. But even now, months later, more women are stepping out in Lululemon, Gap Fit, and Athletica attire even if they haven’t actually hit the gym. Whether they’re on the way to the office, waiting in line for a morning coffee, or school drop-off line, attending casual meetings, or going out for drinks, women are mixing it up with sportswear.
Here are some of the rules of achieving this look like a pro.
Dress for the occasion. Even if you’re a running machine and your body fat percentage is in the negatives, don’t head out in just shorts and a sports bra. If you’re going to meet up with friends for lunch, then even in the hot summer months, cropped leggings and a cute tank is all you need. If you’re headed from barre to bar, spice it up by keeping the leggings and adding a chambray button-up and a fun pair of sandals (not flip-flops).

Keep up with seasonal trends. Just like “regular” fashion has trends, sportswear now has trends. Before, it was all black. Now, we’re looking at color, patterns, and shapes. Follow the same rules of adding layers and swapping colors for what’s seasonally appropriate when it comes to the athleisure trend. For example, choose darker colors once the weather is cooler, and add a chic jacket or pullover and a cute pair of boots to go from gym to office.

Find the balance of fashion and function. Before stepping out, make sure your fabrics are flattering. Well-made clothing from actual athletic brands will offer the support and coverage you need. Just as you wouldn’t want your yoga pants to be see-through when you bend over for downward dog, you wouldn’t want them to be see-through at work. The key is to invest in good, quality pieces.
Know how to appropriately accessorize. All it takes is one good item to take your gym clothes to street clothes. You’re still giving off a sporty look, so don’t go overboard with it. Stick to adding sleek pieces such as a shirt tied around the waist, a fitted jacket, casual sunglasses, or a slightly oversized boyfriend sweater.

How do you achieve a put-together but comfortable look? Also, the man in your life can wear this trend, too.
