A Beautiful Baby's Room

By Anna Patterson

When decorating her baby's nursery, Amanda chose items reflective of her style. She found the Hello Sunshine print at Rifle Paper Co. The tray is from Target, and the baby moccasins are available at Dress & Dwell.

Amanda Mulvene, owner of the New Albany clothing and furniture boutique Dress and Dwell, recently welcomed her son Finn Harrison into the world. She and her husband are overjoyed about the newest addition to their family, and they love spending time in the nursery they designed for him.

In January, Amanda and her husband, Jason, were discussing when they wanted to start their family when Jason joked that Amanda was already pregnant. Surprisingly, Amanda found out she was!

The couple decided to keep the gender unknown until the baby was born. “It’s the biggest surprise of your life,” Amanda says.

These gold prints are from Lulu & Georgia.

Amanda invested time in finding the right accent pieces.

This made decorating the nursery in the family’s Highlands home a challenge since everything had to be gender-neutral. While visiting New York, Amanda stumbled upon a mobile made of blue, yellow, and coral pom-poms – her favorite colors. She fell in love with it and decided to make the mobile the focal point of the nursery. After she discovered the centerpiece of the room, the other pieces fell into place.

Amanda says the secret to designing a nursery is to make it fun and inviting but not overly “kiddish.” She added brass accents, gold animal figurines, and artwork. Her favorite pieces in the room are the vintage gold inkwells her husband found at an antique store in France. “Use pieces that you love and that can later transition to other parts of your home,” Amanda says. “Adding pieces that are your style is important.”

Amanda spent so much time working on the room that at one point her husband asked, “Is this room for the baby, or for Mom?” She responded, “Both!”

Practicality is equally important when choosing decor. Amanda suggests purchasing pieces that also will look good in other parts of your home.

The room is bright and cheery. The majority of the decor came from Dress and Dwell’s furniture line, DwellStudio. Amanda added the line when she expanded the boutique in September – the same time her bundle of joy arrived. She noticed that many of her customers were going through the same stage of life she was, so adding the nursery line made sense.

Amanda has owned and operated Dress and Dwell boutique for four years. Her boutique is located in downtown New Albany and sells clothes, accessories, and furniture.

Seasonal Suggestions
For winter, adding throws or blankets to different areas of the house creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. Adding cable-knit pillows to a couch or chair also gives off a wintry vibe.

Your baby's room can still have a child-like ambiance if you keep your decor simple yet fun.
