LOVE — The Opposite of Being Shut Out

By Bob Mueller

Many people tell me they are a “shut-in.” They may be old, crippled, or sick. Many cannot get out much and have to stay in the house most of the time. I have also visited several jails and penitentiaries. It makes me sad to see men and women shut behind prison bars.

Above most anything else, we Americans want freedom. We do not want to be shut-ins. Young people crave the chance to live their own lives. Husbands or wives do not want to be dominated by the other. We do not want our nation to be governed by a dictator. We want to be free.

But I want to tell you something worse than being a shut-in: being a “shut-out.”

By Lucy M. Pritchett

Losing two of her family members to cancer moved Melissa Pritchett's life in a different direction.

A change of heart. A broken heart. Either one can send you down a different path in life. Melissa Pritchett’s turning point came from a broken heart when her grandfather and brother-in-law both died of cancer within three months of each other. She took care of both of them.

New Technology for Detecting Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women today. Yet successful treatment and survival rates for breast cancer patients are dramatically improved by early detection. When found early, through mammograms or physical exams and before breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate for patients is almost 100 percent. It is wise to know our options and know what types of early detection is available, so we talked with the executive director of Women First, Denise Kirkham, about some new technologies for early detection.

Three Food Subscription Boxes Worth the Money

By Paige Rhodes

These food subscription boxes can be a great gift for friends or family who live out of town.

Monthly subscription gift boxes have grown in popularity over the last couple of years. Many different companies curate everything from cosmetics to dog treats to exotic foods. My personal favorites are those of the food variety, and with dozens of boxes with different themes, there is surely something for everyone.

Not only is this a great thing to do for yourself each month, but if you decide to treat your friends or family, a subscription box really is the gift that keeps on giving.

Stressed? Yes! Mothering three kids under 3

By Carrie Vittitoe

Being a stay at home mom is a full-time job for Mandy that lasts 12-14 hours a day.

Stress has somehow gotten a bad rap. Stress is now synonymous with terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad things. But there are plenty of stresses in life that are wonderful and that we openly welcome into our lives, stresses like staying home full time with three children ages 3 and under.

Mandy Glassner doesn’t like to think of her life as stressful. She knows this time with Novella (3), Aiden (20 months) and Gabriel (3 months) will pass more quickly than she can realize, and she wants to enjoy as much of it as she possibly can.

Still, she has weathered some truly stressful events in the past year. Read how she has coped with them...

The Business of Art & Flowers

By Marie Bradby

Carolyn Minutillo, owner of Lavender Hill Florals, couldn’t imagine choosing any other career.

“I must have flowers always and always.”
— Claude Monet

Once there was a girl who loved flowers. She played in her grandparents’ garden where she breathed in the scent of the roses, the vegetable plants, and the dirt. She would walk into floral shops in her hometown of Chicago just to smell the flowers. When she was 19, she started community college, at first thinking of nursing, then switching to floriculture. But before the first semester had ended, she dropped out...

One dress, four outfits...

By Alissa Hicks

Dress, available at Apricot Lane, $79, 1301 Herr Ln, 502.708.2823; Boots, available at Merci, $195, 3911 Chenoweth Square, 50.893.4252.

Few of us have an unlimited wardrobe of the trendiest pieces of the moment like the fashion bloggers we see on social media. Most of us need to re-wear things multiple times. If you paid good money for a piece and made a good investment in it, you want to get your money’s worth. But being clever with how to reconfigure an outfit isn’t always easy. You’ve got to be creative to take one item and wear it different ways. Let’s take this shift dress as an example.

Just Ask Joyce: I’m Not Sure My Husband Loves Me

By Joyce Oglesby

Q: “I’m not sure my husband loves me. We have great sex, but there’s no emotion attached. We’ve battled Facebook flirtations for the past few years. When I explode, he stops. Pretty soon, he’s right back at it. He’s disconnected from the kids. He comes home when he wants to. He always has activities planned on the weekends with his sports buddies. Between work and play, we get very little time with him. He hasn’t had an affair that I can trace, but I just don’t feel loved. I don’t want another divorce. What should I do?”
