What To Wear to a Winter Wedding

While we mostly think of spring and summer as the start of wedding season, more and more couples are planning winter weddings. The holiday cheer, the charm, and the sparkle of the snow can make for one romantic setting. But wait, it’s winter…it’s cold, it’s snowy...what do you wear?

You can’t just throw on a floral or pastel dress like you can in warmer months. I’ve faced this dilemma and have come up with a list of dos and don’ts to keep in mind when dressing for winter nuptials.

Bracelets, $35 each, available at Apricot Lane1301 Herr Ln, 502.708.2823; Earrings, $12, available at Chartreuse1301 Herr Ln, 502.409.7082

Do: Wear a little black dress, or LBD. It was once believed that black is too mournful for weddings, but these days, an LBD is the chicest thing you can wear to a winter wedding. You’ll look classy and elegant. Tip: Glam it up with some colorful or embellished accessories.

Don’t: Wear anything with too many sequins or that’s overly blinged-out. Even if the wedding is on New Year’s Eve, which seems to be a popular wedding date as of late, you’re not going to a NYE party — you’re attending a wedding. You can add a little sparkle or embellishment to make a dress look holiday-ish, but make sure you don’t go overboard.

Do: Wear opaque tights. Work to find the balance between style and warmth. A winter dress might be sleeveless, so adding a pair of opaque tights strikes a good balance. Tip: Wear a pair of the same color booties to elongate your legs and streamline the look.

Don’t: Wear anything that is of jersey knit, lightweight polyester, or cotton. These fabrics are generally casual and definitely too summery. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you can take a summer dress and add tights or boots to give it a cold-weather look.

Skirt, $59, available at Chartreuse, 1301 Herr Ln, 502.409.7082; Blouse, $86, available at Merci Boutique3911 Chenoweth Square, 502.893.4252

Dress, $245, available at Merci Boutique3911 Chenoweth Square, 502.893.4252

Jumpsuit, $69, and scarf, $29, available at Apricot Lane, 1301 Herr Ln, 502.708.2823

Do: Wear sophisticated separates. If you’re having trouble choosing a winter dress, try the alternative. Pair an embellished sweater or blouse with a skirt or even a pair of chic cigarette pants. Tip: A sophisticated jumpsuit is a good alternative to a dress.

Don’t: Wear anything too short or tight. Again, you’ll give the appearance that you’re going to a NYE party. Plus, it’s cold out! Keep the hem of your dress below your fingertips when your hands are directly hanging at your sides, and consider opting for a dress with sleeves.

Dress, $59, and coat, $103, both available at Colonial Designs3712 Lexington Rd, 502.896.4461

Do: Try a statement coat. You’ll be wearing a coat regardless, so dress it up. That perfect LBD is great to add a boldly styled coat over. If you haven’t already done so, it might be a good time to invest in a classic wool, faux-fur, or peacoat for formal winter occasions. Tip: A fur stole can amp up any dress or even a simple coat.
