Arts Insider Pick of the Week: SHEN YUN

With classical Chinese dance and music, dazzling backdrops and costumes, Shen Yun takes you on a journey into 5,000 years of divine culture. The performance moves quickly through regions, dynasties, and legends. It is a grand production with some 400 costumes and a unique orchestra featuring both classical Western and Chinese instruments, while ethnic and folk dances fill the stage with color and energy. Tremendous athleticism, thunderous battle drums, and masterful vocalists are all set to dazzling animated backdrops. It is a journey to a long-lost world.

For thousands of years, China was known as the Divine Land. The ancients believed their rich culture was passed down from the heavens. This culture emphasized harmony between heaven and earth, and virtues like integrity, compassion, and tolerance.

Tragically, this glorious culture was almost completely destroyed under the last 60 years of communist rule in China, as the regime aimed to stamp out any traditions not in its control. That is why you cannot see a performance like this in China today.

But in 2006, in New York, a group of leading Chinese artists came together united by a wish: to revive the true, divinely inspired culture of China and share it with the world. Together, they formed Shen Yun Performing Arts.
