3 Steps to Creating Your Own Derby Hat

This year, why not try your hand at making your own Derby hat? Shopping for a hat or fascinator can get pricey as well as a little overwhelming if you are trying to match a specific outfit. Luckily Dee’s, one of Louisville’s most popular craft stores, makes creating your own hat as easy as three steps. You can even throw a fun hat-making party with your girlfriends! Swapping ideas and materials while having some Derby-themed appetizers (see our April issue for great recipes!) and faux Lilies sounds like a perfect plan. Here’s how!

Step one: Pick your hat base. Whether you want a floppy, wide-brimmed hat, a more fitted, structured hat, or even a fascinator, choose your base and base color first.

Step two: Choose feathers and florals as well as any other embellishments to add drama and flare to your hat or fascinator.

Step three: Choose ribbon or netting to add the final touches and finishings to tie it all together.

Use your creativity and go with what you like best. After all, it’s your hat and your Derby outfit. You can go simple or with a lot of flare. Just remember the basics: choose one statement piece, either the hat or the dress, and don’t overdo it on the matchy madness

You will need other tools to help create your hat. We suggest a hot glue gun, other adhesives, crafting wire and wire cutters, and scissors. You can also ask the staff at Dee’s for helpful suggestions!
