Men’s Fashion: How to match your style to your personality

Jacket by Zegna, Rodes; Shirt and pocket square, Rodes; Pants, Circe; Shoes, Dillard's

When it comes to men’s fashion, men usually fall into two categories: those who care and those who simply don’t. However, being a stylish man can be pretty effortless. Just like it is for women’s style, men have to follow their personality. Use it as a guideline for what to wear and what to buy. As seen in our latest man issue, these cool guys rock their style based on their personalities. Here’s how to achieve the style basics for men.

Shirt by Etro, Rodes 502.753.7633 $375; Denim, personal; Tie by Eton, Rodes $135; Shoes by Steve Madden, Dillard’s 502.893.4400 $79

For Dominic, our stylist chose something cool and unique to match his spunky and colorful personality. Once you get to know Dominic, he’s a pretty laid-back, easy-to-talk-to guy. He’s personable, so his style should reflect that. Here, we mismatched vertical and horizontal stripes to create a fun, eccentric look while dark denim and neutral suede shoes downplayed the rest of the ensemble.

Tie by Tommy Hilfiger, Macy’s 502.423.3000 $65; Pocket Square by R Hanauer, Rodes 502.753.7633 $25; Slacks by bar III, Macy’s $150; Jacket by Zegna, Rodes $1,295

Lance, on the other hand, was crisp, clean, and sharp-looking, so we wanted to dress him in something to reflect that. Our stylist chose classic basics for him: grey and black tones with a crisp white dress shirt and pocket square to match. To take the style up a notch, try a skinny tie. The slimmer the tie, the more clean-cut it will look. You can never go wrong with a classic black/grey and white duo. Side note: keep it fitted. Tailoring is a friend when it comes to suits. They are not something that should be ill-fitting. Just like a woman's LBD, a suit should show your best features. Never too small and never too big.

Shirt by Agave Denim, Rodes 502.753.7633 $225; Pants by Barbour, Circe 502.894.0095 $149; Bow tie, Rodes $40; Belt by Gaucho, Circe $165; Shoes by Buks, Dillard’s 502.893.4400, $79

Matthew is cutting-edge with his drone robots and technology knowledge, so our stylist went with a trendy look. Red pants that make a statement with a trendy chambray shirt are cool and show that he pays attention to what is in. White suede shoes with a brick sole make the outfit come together with an extra touch of style.

For those who have a fun and strong personality like Matt, style is just as easy to achieve. Matt definitely knows his technology, so we chose to make that his main personality feature to play up. He's also fun and easy to connect with. Suspenders can be used for a more casual look right now, and they’re fun to mix and match. Matt’s light blue shirt with tiny colorful flowers helps showcase the suspenders while showing his fun side. Another conversation piece is the wooden bow tie from Two Guys Bow Ties.

Shirt by Bugatchi, Shirts Ties N Links 502.425.1269 $129; Bow tie by Beau Ties LTD., Shirts Ties N Links; $75 Shoes by Polo Ralph Lauren, Dillard’s 502.893.0044 $75; Pants by Etro, Rodes 502.753.7633 $325

Matt was so fun, we chose two outfits for him! Here, we wanted to show men that mixing unexpected colors and patterns can work. If you can pull off that fun, colorful look, give this a try! Matt's orange bow tie with navy polka dots ties together with his navy dress pants, while the vertically striped teal shirt makes the orange stand out. And of course, his Polo Ralph Lauren sneakers make this work-appropriate look casual and cool at the same time.
