Help Boost Someone's Confidence

Today's Woman Magazine

This past June, Dress for Success Louisville, a career suiting and workforce development organization, won top honors from its worldwide office for linking undeserved women to jobs. The Louisville chapter of this international nonprofit received the “Compass Award” at the Dress for Success Worldwide Affiliate 13th Annual Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“This award is significant because it demonstrates the important workforce readiness training Dress for Success Louisville is providing to connect underserved women to jobs,” says Executive Director, Betty Fox.

“We suit the woman from the inside out,” says Betty, “so we can can help boost her confidence.”

The organization has a small staff, but nearly 100 volunteers help out, including Jan Ward and Helen Edsten, who sort, organize, and display merchandise. “The one thing we like about sorting,” says Jan, “is when the women walk in here, they see, ‘This is for me. People have organized this and put it all together for me.’ It makes them feel better about themselves than when they first walked in.”

If you want to make a difference in a woman’s life by helping her find economic independence, consider volunteering for DFSL, and/or donating new or gently used, current clothing and accessories.

  • Gently used or new, current business clothing--suits, pantsuits, separates (no double-breasted jackets).
  • Full-figure sizes--14 and up; and smaller sizes: 0 - 6
  • Blouses, especially white and cream
  • Camisoles
  • Shoes, especially size 9 and up
  • New pantyhose in the package
  • Scrubs for the healthcare industry
  • Assorted jewelry for the workplace
  • Earrings, clipped or pierced
  • Purses

Donations can be brought by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Saturdays from 9 until noon, no appointment is necessary. You can also drop off clothing at Sam Meyers to be dry cleaned at no cost, just stipulate that its is for Dress for Success.
